My promise to include more gay culture here at GDH has been a rather rewarding thing so far. About a month ago I started to hunt through book stores, record stores, galleries, web sites, studios and clothing stores in LA and online.
First up, the first book from New York photographer Matt Albiani, Life Guard On Duty. I figured a beautiful book of hot men with naturally hot bodies hanging out on beaches from New England to Hawaii in the hot sun was good escapism for the cold winter that’s apparently gripping everywhere but here.
I think we’ve all grown up looking at lifeguards as the unofficial kings of the beach, holding court over the sand and surf.
No nudity here, just some hot young men with sun-bleahced hair, freckles, sun tans and that weather-worn skin you see on men who spend all their time together on the beach, ready to jump off that huge throne they occupy and jump into the water to save someone who needs help.

I confess to being somewhat of a photography aficionado, so this entry is much appreciated, not to mention a welcome tonic to the current winter-blues! Apart from the erotic aspect, Matt Albiani’s compositions have heart, character and style. He has placed these young gods-of-the-surf on a level of comfort with the ambience of the occasion to stunning effect.
My favourite shots are the black and white compositions which automatically bring a more stylised take to the proceedings and work especially well in evoking the uncluttered mood of the location/subject. Likewise, Matt’s portraits communicate extremely well; they invite one to use one’s own imagination as to the subject/s character/motivation/personality, not to mention what lies beneath their board-shorts! I’ve always maintained that a partially-clad body is more EROTIC than a naked one – this book confirms it.
