I’m always scared to watch “gay movies.”

They’re usually awful. If they don’t have a bunch of embarrassing caricatures mincing about the screen, they make sure that the gay guy either dies or gets some incurable disease at the end. They certainly never get the guy.

Don’t worry… I’ll talk about plenty of gay movies, but only the ones we REALLY want to see.

Finally got around to renting Shelter on DVD. It enjoyed a very limited run in theaters but I never made it. Pity. Calling Shelter the “gay surfer movie” is like calling Brokeback Mountain “that movie with the sheep.”

The story of a frustrated budding artist imprisoned by virtue of being the only responsible person in an otherwise dysfunctional extended family, Shelter features some of the most real and believable characters and story seen in a “gay” movie for.. well.. a while.

The problem with most gay movies is that, and since it’s just us guys here, we may as well be blunt, they suck. This one doesn’t. The make out scenes are tasteful and real, romance natural and organic.

And yeah.. plenty of hot men in lyrca or less all wet.

Always a plus.

The story of Zack and Shawn is front and center, but the many messages and underlying lessons are almost more important. But don’t let that scare you. It’s still nice to see a boy-meets-boy movie.

Shelter is beautifully shot on film, not one of those horrible DV-cam video atrocities and it’s depiction of the slum-like San Pedro suburb of Los Angeles as a place that can still be beautiful in it’s own way is almost jaw-dropping.

Don’t expect a lot of over-the-top sex scenes, here. Story and character takes a front seat and the sexy factor is there almost by accident.

I gotta tell you that we laughed out heads of making this scene.

Tristan is.. well.. he’s Tristan. I can give him some vague ideas as to what I want from him as far as the mood of a scene and he’ll ad lib all the dialogue. He’ll just make up one-liners that are both hot and funny and he’ll deliver them in this total dead-pan seriousness that always hits the nail on the head.
